Jackie McAllister and Kenneth Goldsmith

Jan 25, 2010

In conjunction with the current exhibition of works by KRIWET, Ludlow 38 is delighted to announce an accompanying event at the Goethe-Institut Wyoming Building on Monday, January 25, at 7pm. The evening brings together New York-based artists Jackie McAllister and Kenneth Goldsmith, who in their own work continue various threads and ideas also present in the oeuvre of KRIWET. While McAllister’s talk is an attempt to disentangle the work of KRIWET semantically, Goldsmith’s reading picks up some of the concepts and topics prevalent in KRIWET’s work.

Jackie McAllister is an artist and writer living and working in New York. He has exhibited at institutions including Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Graz; Le Consortium, Dijon; and Kunstverein Hamburg, Akademie Kunst lehren und lernen (2005), a collaboration with Mark Dion. He was vice-president of American Fine Arts, Co. from 1989 to 1992. Since 2001, he has been president of the McAllister Institute (Gareth James being founding director), where presentations in the Tight Little Room have included Nils Norman, Merlin Carpenter, Florian Zeyfang, Dave Beech, Simon Bedwell and BANK, Sarah Staton, Ross Knight, Mark Dion and students from Columbia University, Jeremy Glogan, Adam McEwen, Michael Krebber and Rachel Harrison (together). He has contributed to publications such as Afterall, Artforum, Grand Street, and Malik Gaines’ Yard: A Magazine by Artists.

Kenneth Goldsmith’s writing has been called “some of the most exhaustive and beautiful collage work yet produced in poetry” by Publishers Weekly. Goldsmith is the author of ten books of poetry, founding editor of the online archive UbuWeb, and the editor of I’ll Be Your Mirror: The Selected Andy Warhol Interviews, which was the basis for an opera, Trans-Warhol, that premiered in Geneva in March of 2007. An hour-long documentary on his work, Sucking on Words, premiered at the British Library in 2007. Kenneth Goldsmith is the host of a weekly radio show on New York City’s WFMU. He teaches writing at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is a senior editor of PennSound, an online poetry archive. He has been awarded the the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow Professorship in American Studies at Princeton University for 2009-10 and received the Qwartz Electronic Music Award in Paris in 2009. A book of critical essays, Uncreative Writing, is forthcoming from Columbia University Press, as is an anthology from Northwestern University Press co-edited with Craig Dworkin, Against Expression: An Anthology of Conceptual Writing.
