Call for Applications

For its residency program MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38, the Goethe-Institut New York is presently seeking a

Curatorial Resident (2019)

Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Ludlow 38 has provided for curatorial experimentation in the tradition of the German “Kunstverein” since 2008. The residency program’s mission is to introduce new, international perspectives to the local art scene and to foster dialogue within the greater aesthetic and political context of New York and the United States.

Ludlow 38 functions as a platform for international exchange, with key input from the annually rotating curatorial residents. In close collaboration with the residency program team, they are expected to program the space with a variety of critical and engaging formats over the course of a year, including organization, installation, and promotion of a total of six exhibitions and related events. The curatorial residents thereby gain experience in the operation of a small art space with a distinctive international profile.

Applicants should have a minimum of five years curatorial experience in Germany and a clear vision of their own practice as curators. Knowledge of the history of exhibition making and a keen awareness of the social and political context in which curatorial work is presented are crucial, as is a critical understanding of contemporary art. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a significant link between their own curatorial trajectory and the cultural discourse of the last decades in Germany and the United States. The successful candidate is furthermore expected to possess a curatorial approach that will enable them to establish links between Ludlow 38 and other initiatives at a local and international level during the residency.

Fluency in English and German is expected, as is familiarity with social media and other communications instruments.

In addition to a one-page CV and cover letter, applicants should provide a 1000-word outline of two exhibition and/or project ideas that explore the potential of Ludlow 38 and which they envision implementing during a one-year residency at the space. All materials must be submitted electronically and in English; previous candidates are encouraged to re-apply. Applications will be judged on the basis of work experience, submitted proposals, as well as the capacity to work with a limited budget and make a focused impact on the competitive and rapidly changing New York art scene.

The position includes a stipend to cover living expenses and health insurance as well as a small remuneration for services provided at the gallery (4,200 USD total per month). The Goethe-Institut will support the successful candidate’s application for a J1 exchange visa for the United States.

The final selection will be made by an international jury of three high-profile curators.

No calls, please. Please note that specific queries about the art space including exhibitions budget cannot be answered.
