Transformella—Queen of Debris examines the future of human reproduction and its relationship with capitalist production. In the age of artificial insemination, pre-implantation diagnosis, and surrogacy, human reproduction has become globalized and industrialized. Serial infant production by way of surrogate mothers has been outsourced to developing countries such as India.
In New York City, Transformella will use the collectivization of a daily necessity such as washing dirty laundry on a reconnaissance mission across the Lower East Side. The objective in traveling to different laundromats is to research whether we are able and willing to think of industrialization and collectivization in the field of reproduction of our daily livelihood. The reality of the unfolding “Reprovolution”—the revolution of the human species’ reproduction—as well as the global care chain starts with our dirty clothes and us. For once we will clean them together, using the washing time to hear Transformella giving an insight into her “Again Communist Reprovolutionary Manifesto.”
To gain access to the laundromat’s reproductive hospitality it is essential for Transformella and her repro-communal tribe to bring heaps of laundry. No amount is too small, nothing is too dirty, and no bulk is too much!
